The Conficker (or Downadup) worm infected over 10 million Windows machines in the last few months. It exploits a bug in the Windows Server service used by Windows 2000, XP, Vista, Server 2003 and Server 2008. The Romanian security vendor Bit Defender released a Downadup removal tool which will delete all versions and variations of Conficker/Downadup and is not detected by the virus (yet).
Conficker is one of the most advanced pieces of malicious software ever built, and has been detected in computers of home users, companies and governments. The virus spreads primarily through a buffer overflow vulnerability in Windows Server Service where it disables the operating system update service, security center, including Windows Defender, and error reporting. If you're interested in the technical details behind Conficker, check out this highly detailed Conficker analysis by SRI International.
Microsoft released a patch to prevent infection in october 2008, but many systems seem to miss out on regular security updates, which keep them in risc of being affected. More info from Microsoft on Conficker here. A simple tool to clean already infected machines wasn't available yet. The Romanian based security company Bit Defender released a Downadup removal tool.
Microsoft showed it's concern last month by offering a $250,000 reward for information that results in the arrest and conviction of those responsible for launching Conficker on the internet.
This again shows how important it is, especially if you're a Windows user, to keep your system patches and anti-virus software up to date.
