Piwik is a free software web analytics program. It's not a web service, but a tool which can be downloaded and installed locally. Piwik provides detailed reports on website usage, visitors, search engines and keywords / keyphrases used, languages supported by visitors, popularity of pages and much much more.
The current Piwik package (v.0.2.32) is based on PHP 5.1+ and MySQL, it counts 19 translated versions. You install it on your webserver in under 5 minutes (so they claim, not tested yet myself). At the end you will be provided with a JavaScript tag, which can be copy and pasted on websites and pages you wish to track. Piwik also offers an existing plugin to do it automatically for you.
Many of Piwik's features are built inside plugins: You can add new features yourself and remove the ones you don't need. Developers can build their own plugins. Because Piwik is installed on your server locally, the data is stored in your own database and you can get all the statistics using open APIs (publishing the data in many formats: xml, json, php, csv). Recently, the user interface has been made fully customisable as well, allowing you to drag and drop widgets you want to display and create the reports like you want them.
Piwik is a successor of phpMyVisites with a high potential. If your concerned about your users privacy and the changing privacy statements of popular online web analytics services, Piwik might be just the free software you need. It looks very promising.
