Privoxy, the Privacy Enhancing Proxy is a free non-caching web proxy with advanced filtering capabilities for enhancing your privacy, modifying web page data and HTTP headers, controlling access, and removing ads and other unwanted stuff when surfing the internet.
Privoxy has a flexible configuration and can be customized for your personal, individual needs and tastes. Privoxy can be used for stand-alone systems (locally on your computer) as well as for multi-user networks (on your LAN gateway to the internet). After installing, just let your browser connect to the newly available proxy. Currently, Privoxy runs on Windows (95, 98, ME, 2000, XP, Vista), GNU/Linux (RedHat, SuSE, Debian, Fedora, Gentoo, Slackware and others), Mac OSX, OS/2, AmigaOS, FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, Solaris, and various other flavors of Unix. Privoxy is free software, released under the GPL2, so no panic if your favourite OS is missing in the list.
Privoxy is a follow-up of Junkbuster, the first stable release (version 3.0) was released August 2002. Some features include:
- Privoxy can keep outgoing connections alive and reuse them later on.
- Privoxy supports tagging which allows to change the behaviour based on client and server headers.
- Privoxy can be run as an "intercepting" proxy, which obviates the need to configure browsers individually.
- Privoxy can filter or manipulate both server and client headers.
- Privoxy can be chained with other proxies.
- Privoxy has an integrated browser based configuration and control utility at http://config.privoxy.org/ (shortcut: http://p.p/).
- Privoxy offers browser-based tracing of rule and filter effects. Remote toggling.
- Privoxy can filter web pages (text replacements, removes banners based on size, invisible "web-bugs", JavaScript and HTML annoyances, pop-up windows, etc.)
- Privoxy has a modularized configuration that allows for standard settings and user settings to reside in separate files, simplifying upgrades and updates without overwriting individual user settings.
- Privoxy supports Perl Compatible Regular Expressions in the configuration files
- Privoxy offers many cookie management features (e.g. session based cookies).
- Privoxy can automagically de-animate GIF images.
- Privoxy can bypass many click-tracking scripts and avoid script redirection.
- Privoxy is multi-threaded (POSIX and native threads).
- Privoxy has user-customizable HTML templates for most proxy-generated pages (e.g. "blocked" page).
- Privoxy offers auto-detection and re-reading of config file changes.
- Privoxy offers signal handling and a true daemon mode on *nix systems.
- Everything controllable on a per-site or per-location basis.
