YaCy is a scalable open source P2P based web search engine, built in Java. YaCy uses a distributed integrated web crawler and implemented an index sharing method similar to peer-to-peer file sharing. By sharing web index information with other peers, YaCy is resistant against censoring the same way as P2P filesharing is resistant against deletion.
If you run a YaCy peer, you can have your own search engine. Use it for search functionality on your own search portal, domain or content, or join a community of search engine peers to share your web index with web indices of other (related) YaCy peer owners. A YaCy search request is anonymous because the request is not fed to a central search portal entity, but sent locally to your own computer/server only. No central server can log, store, monitor or evaluate your searches, which makes YaCy a useful alternative for centralized search portals.
YaCy platform independant code runs on a variety of platforms, where Java is supported. With a built in caching/scraping http proxy and it's own database, one YaCy installation can store more than 20 million documents. Team up with search peers, and the YaCy community can provide a search index of unlimited size. Content analysis, management functions and administration can be accessed via a httpd/web interface. A simple three minute installation (download, decompress, start) is all you need to get going. No setup of web servers, databases is required.
