Danger from the Deep, also known as Dangerdeep or DftD, is a free open source submarine simulator game. The primary objective of the developers is creating a realistic simulation of a german World War II submarine which is interesting to play. Their main focus is on strategy, tactics and realistic physics. But that doesn't mean the graphics and sounds aren't impressive as well. Being open source, Danger from the Deep can be compiled for and played on many different platforms.

The Danger from the Deep program and source code are available under the GPL license, most of the artwork and data is released under a Creative Commons license. There are binaries available for Linux (i386 and amd64), Windows (32bit) and some old packages for MacOSX. Danger from the Deep makes use of SDL/OpenGL and thus should be portable to other operating systems or platforms as well. Danger from the Deep has been reported to work on Windows2000/XP/98, Linux i386/x86-64/sparc64, FreeBSD x86-64/sparc64/IA64 and MacOSX ppc64.

Despite being in Alpha stage (current version 0.3.0), the DftD game is already playable in a standalone version. The DangerDeep gallery gives an good idea of what to expect. In future versions, network play might be added, to participate in wolfpack tactics and battle against surface vessels. The development team welcomes new contributors and/or people willing to create binary packages for various Linux distributions.
