Nexuiz is a free open source 3D first person shooter (FPS), licensed under the GPL, running on Windows, Linux and OSX. OpenGL support is required. The Nexuiz game is created by a team of developers called Alientrap. The Nexuiz project released the first version on 31 May 2005. Currently at version 2.5, Nexuiz has been downloaded over 1.5 million times.

Nexuiz is similar to games like Quake and Unreal Tournament. Perhaps not comparable with the latest greatest versions of these games, but that's no surprise without a big development studio behind it, and without lots and lots of financial investment. Nevertheless, the basis is impressive, and I hope the openness of this game will make people enthousiastic to contribute to the Nexuiz project by adding artwork like graphics, audio and new levels. Nexuiz is already pretty full featured as it is.

Being open source, I wonder how they'll counter people making and using cheats, like aimbots and scripts for instance. Usually, FPS games use some sort of closed source solution or DRM for that. I bet the development team is creative enough for solving this (possible) issue. I don't know if the open source Quake 2 engine was used for Nexuiz.

I congratulate the Alientrap team with their achievement, release 2.5 looks very nice indeed.
